Why A Zim Hip Hop Top 10 MCs or a G.O.A.T List Simply Can’t Exist
January 25, 2018Panashe Gomendo
So looking at the 2015 MTV Base's list of the Top 10 South African MCs. The G.O.A.T List.
People of course caught feelings and the works and social media was set on fire with the same flippancy as an errant child with a box of matches. Oh there were feels for days.
Sounded cute and after roughly 3.65497 seconds of giving it a thought (including a sip of that green tea) I decided, nah.
Well first of all I generally haven’t been into lists for the past month now or so and that sort of thing. Not that I won’t ever but right now, I am kinda stuck to publishing lists that belong to other people. For some reason it is more fun that way.
The second reason we would not push one now on Zim Hip Hop is because what would that list be like? How do you choose who the better MC was between Tehn Diamond, Cal_Vin or Noble. Sure the latter has been pushing more product in the last year and even has two albums while the former still hasn’t delivered his first but does that define an MC?
Pushing that a bit further, Stunner has been in the game for long, so if we put him as number 7 he will have a fit because he does command a huge following. Oh we will get trolled if we put him as number 1 as well because he has more traction outside social media than most. But is that alone enough?
In fact the game in Zimbabwe is so fragmented. You will even have arguments over who is hip hop and who isn’t.
We have to look at the whole genre, actually. Promoters still look at it as a risk and will hire rappers as add-ons to bigger acts on the bill and not because it is the specific artist in demand. To be honest, Zim hip hop does not have its standout kids who pack venues.
Takura |
Social media reach helps but how much of it must define whether you are a dope MC or not? And how much of that social media reach is because of music and not just chatter cause you tweet a lot?
So someone else then says skills. If skills was the main factor then we know Kwesta owns KO and Cassper Nyovest who were at that time who were ranked first and second. So it can’t be that.
Bars for bars that is hard and we’d need to get super-academic. We might take Noble Stylz or Fucci, but I will be stuck cause then I will have to throw Munetsi in there but then the stuff we spoke about up there will be thrown in our faces again.
The simple realities are, well, quite candidly put, until we have tangibles then we can’t really have the big chat about the status of slumbering child that is Zim hip hop. And we aren’t talking about money because you attract the coolest endorsements. We have seen the weirdest things get endorsements in this world so it doesn’t follow that if you get paid for something, you are the dopest at it.
Is this a cop-out? No. Just real talk.
Feel free to catch feelings though…and leave a comment!

R.Peels latest EP (MbiriKunaPharoah) is out and its HOTTTT!
January 22, 2018Panashe Gomendo
Some good music to add to your playlist for the whole year!
R.Peels posted on his Facebook wall today at midday signaling the latest development where he wrote, "My 4th Project .This solidifies my place here ...hatipere Hatisati tatanga ....a New Level ,A blueprint".
Well I have to be honest and say this is the trillest project I have heard in a long time since Noble Stylz's Masofa Panze.
'Mwana waPharoah' as he calls himself really solidifies his place deep in the game and it is going to be challenging to challenge such talent this early in 2018.
After a few hours to the time of this post, I had already listened to the whole Ep numerous times.
The Intro itself 'Bad Emcee' is fire and is actually my favorite on the whole project, atleast for now, having been produced by Blessmore 'Myclyne' Matikiti who is also a grandmaster when it comes to producing and cooking smashing hits, that has been proven over the years he has been in the business, and the best part is that it is him who primarily produced the whole project.
Cap neTenesi is another track to look out for, already performing well everywhere. Em girls who can twerk (showing up) have been doing their best on this track well before the whole project was released off the Ep.
Perhaps another good song to look out for that was done in Shona is 'Ndiye' where he parades out the story of a Zimbabwean Thug, well funny enough we have our own kind of thugs, if you didn't know and he sets out loud the real defintion of a 'Ghevha' (thug).
Not forgetting the slow jam track 2 tittled 'Havafare'. I don't know, I really don't know why I have this bias towards Myclyne but he really sets the tone for me, especially with this masterpiece of a beat (just waiting for him to go international).
There are many important points to note here, I myself can never exhaust every point that I have about this Ep but my message is quite clear - Download the Ep and support the movement. Why? Because its OUR movement. Its a project that lay outs the facts why we love Zimhiphop, foremost its our own version of Hiphop.
Another thing to note is that our young artists (same as our writters and bloggers) are growing and they just need your support, this is not only the case with Zimhiphop, I'm sure Zimdancehall situation is just the same and one day they will be looked up upon. This is our own!
For R.Peels I give credit to him for showing that he has evolved over time and really deserves our time, support and airplay that we have been giving him, again to be recognized and to be up there with all the guys in the game when he is still that young, certainly the future is bright only if he keeps up the standard and raising it high.
Download this BrandNew Ep here or HERE
Its refreshing to listen to music that you can easily relate to, not the gone-days in the old times when we used to listen and sing about the Buggattis that we could not afford and all the imaginations in our heads.
I will leave it here, especially at this moment, when I'm not yet satisfied with this good piece of art and music which really does it for me, kickstarting my year on a peak! So basically I'm saying if you think I have missed out an important point to note, please do leave a comment:

Video: 'PrettyGirls' by AnonziXndr ft R.Peels
January 22, 2018Panashe Gomendo
DOWNLOAD and Listen to 'Pretty Girls' by AnonziXndr featuring R.Peels. This track is a 'dedication' to the originals, to the pretty ladies out there and to all the original Melanin girls they say!
In terms of the vocals with AnonziXndr and R.Peels in it, its got to be a 100. Nice Work team! Not sure about the general overall output of the video which I feel could have been done exceptionally well, if it wasn't for many reasons.
But the most important one has to do with that chick, she ain't that pretty although we like her moves which were excellent, confidence 100 and all throughout the video.
Again the outfits, all of them geez!! There is no coordination in the video between the concept and the outfits they are wearing to make that all needed punch. We should be left inspired and highly motivated to upgrade our sense of fashion and style, not demotivated!
Therefore I feel the video could have been better. In the end, have got to be honest and say most will prefer the (mp3) track more than the (mp4) visual.
Great Concept to kick start this year on a high!

Well, ‘Ingoma Backstage Pass’ has been a fantastic show in the
showbiz industry as they, through their presenters, brings to you an in depth look and a
close-up view through its so-called ‘backstage pass’, on the best artists and celebrities
in the entertainment industry in its beginner’s year after its formation
-2017.
To those who still have no idea what this is, as said in my
previous post which was primarily focused on this show -this is basically an
online show that is regularly shown on the Zimpapers Television Network (ZTN) website,
at least for now, that walks you through a backstage view of various concerts
performed by various and different musicians and also allows its viewers to
catch a glimpse look into the lives of some of their favorite performing artists. Important to note is that, not
only does it focus on Zimbabwean celebrities and artists from Zimbabwe but have
managed to sit down with some of the best from S.A and Jamaica, so I can safely say this is
basically a locally produced global show.
Picture it as a tour around concerts as it looks much like it,
definitely they are on a mission.
It gives you a closer look on some of your best artists and
celebrities, within its reach. Having so far sat down and interviewed Beenie
Man, Casper Nyovest and Brian Nhira. Well, their reach as you can see is
unreachable to some of their local competitors setting up the pace.
Certainly the show promises nothing but fireworks in 2018,
where ZTN as large as it is, is looking on stepping up their programs that they
have been showing on its website: www.ztn.co.zw
Programs like the ‘Kucheza Playlist’ which is a video chart
show, both local and international visuals for hit songs and ‘My life in 5’ are
set to be in full swing this year as they are in cooks at the moment.

On another
issue completely unrelated to Ingoma but has been trending in the entertainment front, is the issue of
submitting music as an artist or producer to our radio stations at the moment
which has a direct effect on artists. Unlike Star FM which has remained
consistent towards the issue of submitting music in which they prefer submitting
music through hardcopy discs and in person – Power FM on the other hand now has opened
the door to artists to submit their music through online means, that is through
email. You can now submit your work through email at: powerfm.music@zbc.co.zw.
All tracks
and songs must be in MP3 format and do not forget to include your profile (Artist
Profile).
LOVING this track by Gze and Shiddoh Brown tittled 'Maybe'. I feel this should have been a hit, and would recommend a video for this nice track. This was released last year in April, take a listen.

The book 'Masasi aChinoz', which is a collection of jocular, crazy and amusing statements formed and articulated around the person of Joseph 'Chinoz' Chinotimba - Buhera South Legislator, will be launched this year.
Cde Chinoz said the book provides a solid foundation for him to turn into acting in the near future to spice up his illustrious career.
The book provides a rib cracking conversation that also captures the popular politician's autobiography.
The book was primarily written by Chenjerai Mhonder and will be launched early this year. ''Apart from the moments of laughter and jokes, the book carries my liberation struggle history,'' said the humorous Cde Chinotimba.
